The 530-kilometer stretch of road was dotted with 69 post towns. Our reporter, JJ, walks along a preserved section of the Nakasendo and stops at Tsumago, a beautifully restored post town. He spends the night at a venerable inn and meets people who treasure a traditional way of life. This edition of journeys in japan features a walk back in time along an Edo era road. Tsumago-juku Tsumago, in Nagano prefecture, is 300 kilometers from Tokyo. The town developed as the 42nd post station from Edo. At Tsumago, the 600-meter length of road is lined with 150 wooden structures including inns, handsome souvenir shops and private homes. The street retains an atmosphere of olden times. Tourist information http://www.tumago.jp/english/index.html (English & Japanese) Matsushiroya-inn Matsushiroya was established in 1804. It's the only remaining inn in Tsumago in its original wooden structure. The inn has seven rooms, and there are no TVs, clocks or phones... Guests can lose themselves in the authentic, rustic ambience. Inn: Closed Wednesdays Tel : (+81) 264-57-3022 Rates: 10500 yen (meals inclusive) http://www17.ocn.ne.jp/~hatago-m/ (Japanese only) Wachinoya The structure was built about 200 years ago. The former private home has been restored as a shop offering oyaki flour buns with assorted fillings. http://tumago.jp/buy/post-19.html (Japanese only) Magome-juku Magome, in Gifu prefecture, is the 43rd post station from Edo. It was built into a slope, which is rare in Japan.
