La storia è ambientata in Giappone nel periodo Edo (1603-1867), quella parte della storia in cui la famiglia Tokugawa detenne, con lo shogunato, il massimo potere politico e militare nel paese. Il Giappone, isolato dal mondo esterno, vive un periodo molto difficile: il paese stenta a riprendersi dalle lunghe guerre civili che si sono svolte nelle epoche precedenti. Questi anni sono costellati di intrighi, lotte e sanguinose vendette tra i vari clan feudali. Durante una notte di tempesta, scoppia una strana epidemia nel povero villaggio di Shimoda. La stessa notte vengono avvistati dei misteriosi cavalieri che attraversano di nascosto il territorio. Di fronte a questi gravi e inaspettati avvenimenti, il signore del feudo locale invia un gruppo di ninja ad indagare; ma questi, prima di poter svolgere la propria missione, vengono brutalmente massacrati da un’invincibile uomo di pietra. Unica a salvarsi è la bella Kagero, che però rischia di essere violentata dal mostruoso assalitore. In sua difesa interviene Jubei, un ronin vagabondo che porta con sé la micidiale spada Murasame. I due riescono a fuggire e finiscono per separarsi; ma il destino riunirà presto le loro strade. Infatti, i due resteranno coinvolti, insieme allo spietato agente governativo Dakuan, in un pericoloso complotto volto a rovesciare i Tokugawa. Complotto al cui centro spicca l’ombra degli Otto Demoni di Kimon, ninja padroni di tecniche micidiali e capitanati da Genma, un uomo che Jubei era convinto di aver ucciso in passato.
